Sink or swim… November 14, 2008

I have an issue. The gov’t has announced that $15m has been set aside for an Olympic swimming pool. Which I think is a great thing but… well, not right now. Affordable housing initiatives have been cut or minimised and we are spending money on a pool? Is this really a priority?

Don’t get me wrong, I do understand having an Olympic sized pool would be a boon to the island and our aspiring swimmers but when thought of in terms of the current fiscal environment, of which many analysts state will get worse and even our own government admits we haven’t seen the bottom of, it seems… well, it seems rather stupid. Don’t worry if you’ve not got anywhere to live cause we can swim just the two laps instead of the four (we do currently have one or two half-sized pools)!

Minister Burch yesterday held a press conference in which he waxed eloquent on how we need to tighten our belts and focus on the important things, to “stop using people and loving things”. And I totally agree with him…

I think you’re right – basics first before icing on cake. At it’s simplist, it just doesn’t feel right.

I’m not sure what you say to someone who has been waiting and waiting for Govt housing to come on line according to their first plans, only to be told “sorry – but at least we are building a swimming pool”.

I am also struggling to understand just ‘how’ an Olympic pool would be a boon to the island. I can see it would be a great boost for local swimmers, always great to get a new, classy something or other, but beyond that I am struggling.

    Just trying to understand.

Opportunities to expose our young swimmers via training in an international level facility, host international meets, and possibly attract the attention of U.S. colleges that may offer scholarships to those who excel, are some benefits to having a swimming facility on the island.

People have been happy with the money granted to the BFA, BCB and for the Port Royal Golf course renovations, if there is a budget allocation for sports in the new year why shouldn’t it go to swimming?

In the final analysis, Govt is there to decide who gets what and when.

I have absolutely no problem with swimming receiving tax payers money but, like Alsys, I sense this is really not the right time for two reasons:

    1. We still have Bermudians who need help with low cost housing, &
    2. Facing a ‘pulling-in’ of expense by Govt, it doesn’t sit comfortably with that situation.
